An automatic back wash filter in interesting because the blocked filter medium is automatically cleaned. The cleaning can be done by a counter current flow of a clean liquid; this can be the already filtered liquid or another clean liquid alternatively the cleaning can be done by a gas puls.

The filter media used in automatic back wash filters are textile, wire mesh, trislot or sintered metal.

The cake can be removed as a slurry or a dry filter cake.

Depending the type of automatic back wash filter to max dirt solid load of the liquid can be between 50ppm and 10%.
